Comments about LocoGringo Gran Bahia Principe Akumal:

First off, we were given a room near the beach only to have it taken away from us based on a bogus story and a lie, we were than given a smaller room away from the beach. I did however pay for the upgraded room. tried to get a room change but was told no rooms were available. Although we saw new arrivals get checked in to rooms. Our room a/c unit never worked , We did complain about the a/c unit and were told that it would be fixed. All that was done to the a/c was that they turned down the thermostat which did not fix the problem . I complained all 4 days we were there . The Hotel staff was rude and combative and the problem was never resolved. The television in our room was an old 19" unit that had a picture that was so bad you could barely see what was on the screen. I also complained about the television and was told that it was fine.My wife and I had a problem with the Dolphin encounter at the Coba portion of the hotel complex. The pool that the 4 dolphins are keep in is a very small pool. Such a terrible thing to do to such beautiful creatures. They weren't put here to entertain us.Overall, We would not ever stay here again or would I recommend it to anyone I know.We go to the RM every year and next time we go we will look for some place else to stay. This was not our first time at this resort, but it appears that past customers don't mean anything to this hotel.

Comments about LocoGringo Gran Bahia Principe Akumal:

We had stayed at the Akumal Royal Golden last April for 2 weeks, we are going back. This resort is gorgeous, took some time getting around (very big) but had fun getting lost. Golf course- amazing, spa- great, tours- go to the hut by the pool (cheaper), restaurants-la gran Tortuga(brazilian)went 2x sooo goood, and buffet excellent. The holiday I wanted, knew nobody (met some great people) soak up the sun, read a book, drink by the pool, and do some tours. One disapointment is not with the staff/hotel but with the guests, a guy with french accent was so rude to a tram driver my boyfriend was ready to deck him, all because the tram was going one way and the very rude man (cant swear) wanted to go other way(then get off and wait for next one) but driver handled well. To Guests when going on vacation, dont forget to bring your manners, I know things happen, thats life, if u want a PERFECT vacation STAY HOME. Dont be rude to staff, they will help you if you need it, just ask. They have a tough job and they get to know you and smile all the time. I would recommend this hotel to friends, but Im keeping a secret, again want to go and not know anybody.:-) I've read the comments posted here, some I dont agree with, it is quiet there, hear birds and wildlife, dude who cant find bandades (they where there and yes brainwave bring ur own. Bottom line, great hotel, great staff, going back.

We have been 4 times and are going again in January 2011.

There are some rocks in the ocean, it's called coral. Bring water shoes!

Most of the staff we have encountered are very congenial.

There are multiple buffets all with a different layout and some variation in the food. Overall the a la carte restaurants are nice and the service is good. Our favourite would be the Arlequin with it's french style gourmet food. Even with multiple buffets the food can be a little repetitive near the end of your stay.

The rooms are large enough to not feel cramped. The scenery is beautiful and the grounds are kept up very nicely. If you leave a note for the staff in your room they will leave extra coffee as well as a litre of milk.

The trams can be a little frustrating at times due to some confusion as to where they are going and when the next one is coming. However, trams are essential on a resort this large.

We feel very safe on this resort.

Wifi internet is free in the lobby if you bring your own laptop. They had rental netbooks the last time we were there.

Comments about LocoGringo Gran Bahia Principe Akumal:

My husband, our 3 little girls, and I stayed for a week at the Akumal in 2009 and had a great time. In 2010 I traveled with just my 3 little girls, so I chose the same resort since we were familiar and had a good time the year before. In 2009 we didn't use the kids club. In 2010 I took advantage of it and found it to be quite good. Overall we had a great time, but by the end of the week I was less enchanted with the place.

The arrangement of the Akumal resort is such that all the rooms are on one side of the resort, and the main building & pools on the other. This requires catching a shuttle or walking for all meals & the pool areas. As the shuttles don't come by that often, and usually won't stop if you aren't waiting at one of the benches provided, most of the time we had to walk for several minutes. This was hard to do with young children. (For our stay in 2009, we had a room near the main building, but in 2010 we were WAY in the back of the property.)

Another disappointment we discovered in 2010, because it rained several days, is there's not enough entertainment when you cannot be at the pool/beach. The resort should put in a game room with arcade games and game tables. There are 2 game tables in the main auditorium, but they were always occupied and not good for children.

Otherwise, the property is great, with a terrific beach, nice pools and good food.

Service & Delivery comments:

Service was very good in the rooms, the restaurant and the pools. The Kid's camp was great, the bartenders were generous, and the waiters were (mostly) attentive.

One thing that bothered me was getting a decent cup of coffee. A coffee machine is in the room but it tasted very bad in my opinion. In 2009, I discovered an Espresso machine in the Main Auditorium, and at 6am each day I would walk over and get a "Cafe Americano", espresso with double the water. It was nice and strong. In 2010, the same woman who was there the year before said the rule was she could not make me coffee until 10am. Quite frustrating!

There is an Espresso machine in back of the restaurant seating area, but mostly the waiters didn't understand what I wanted, and they were understaffed so it took a while to be served, or they would forget & I would have to ask again.

Granted, most people are probabaly not as picky about their coffee as me. Nevertheless, a resort that caters to international customers should be ready to satisfy a wide range of tastes in coffee, just like they do in their food and achoholic beverages.
